Today … Valentine’s Day! I know some of you would like to jump from February 13 right away to February 15,Valentine’s Day is one of those holidays, like Mother’s Day or Father’s Day. But I know it’s a difficult time for many of you, because the person you wanted to bestow love on has already passed away. But really, Valentine’s Day can be celebrated in many ways, both big and small.

I won’t go into all the reasons why mourning and Valentine’s Day don’t go hand in hand; if this day is difficult for you, you know perfectly well why. That’s why I thought I’d share a few ways to get through this day.

Listen :
Allow yourself to be sad. It is REALLY OK to be unhappy on this day. You are not alone in this – many people are not fond of Valentine’s Day! And not only those who have lost a life partner.
Thought : Ignore this day. Avoid pushy ads for jewelry, cards, chocolates. If possible, stay at home and avoid the media.
Do you feel that my proposals are unrealistic? I understand. Pretending that this day doesn’t exist can be difficult, and spending it in sadness is not for everyone. That’s why I have another suggestion:
Change your perspective. Valentine’s Day is associated with romance, but it’s actually about love in any form. I repeat love in any form. You can celebrate this day by showing love to yourself, friends, family or even strangers.
WHAT do I do? Husband – of course , Mom, Brother and Nephew-niece, closest friends – they always get “something” from me every year ( a simple card, one rose, chocolates) with a GREAT inscription I LOVE YOU …… but that’s not all …. I love for….. And here I list
I know some of you may be rolling your eyes. I know that Valentine’s Day – a day that can be difficult for many of us, especially when we are experiencing bereavement. This holiday, which often highlights the absence of a loved one, can cause pain and sadness. But remember that love has many faces and we can celebrate it in different ways, even in the face of loss.

Love for friends and family:
We have Big Steps:
Invite loved ones over for a get-together or dinner. Surround yourself with people who understand your feelings and with whom you can share memories.
A good idea is to Have an evening with others who are experiencing a similar loss. Recognize that the day is difficult, but set a goal of having fun and laughing. You can go to the movies for a comedy, organize a game night, go bowling, go to a comedy club or sing karaoke. IT’S OK !!!!
Let your children choose the activity. Let them dream as much as your budget allows. Grieving children need an opportunity for good, healthy fun, and seeing them smile will warm your heart. Don’t be afraid to acknowledge that being together as a family highlights who you miss, and take every opportunity to reminisce and talk about your loved one, even if it’s just to say: “Dad would have loved that.”

Baby steps:
Share your feelings with a loved one. If you feel depressed and don’t want to be alone, invite someone over for a quiet evening.
Organize a movie night with your children. Choose light movies such as comedies, animations or old classics. Order pizza, put on pajamas and enjoy time together.
Send a card or flowers to a friend or family member who is also feeling down on Valentine’s Day. Perhaps they are mourning the same loss as you or have experienced other difficulties. Let them know that they are not alone.
And like a mantra repeat : Remember that there is no one right way to experience this day. The most important thing is that you listen to your heart and do what is best for you. The love you carry inside you is eternal and will always find a way to express itself.
And since Valentine’s Day is tomorrow, it’s worth considering how to survive this day, especially when your heart still hurts after the loss of a loved one. I know that for many of us this time can be extremely difficult. That’s why I’m sharing some ideas that may help:

Love to friends and family:
Larger steps:
Invite a group of loved ones to a casual gathering or dinner together.
Organize an evening with people who have experienced a similar loss. Recognize that the day is difficult, but put on a good time and laughter. You can go to the movies for a comedy, have a game night, go bowling, go to a comedy club or sing karaoke.
Let your children choose the activity. Let them dream within their budget. Grieving children need opportunities to rejoice, and their smiles will warm your heart. Don’t be afraid to admit that being together as a family highlights the absence of someone important. Take every opportunity to reminisce and talk about your loved one, even if it’s just saying: “Dad would love that.”

Smaller steps:
Tell a loved one that you feel depressed and don’t want to be alone. Invite her for a quiet evening.
Organize a movie night with your children. Choose light movies such as comedies, animations or old classics. Order pizza and put on pajamas.
Send a card or flowers to a friend or family member you know is also feeling down on Valentine’s Day. Perhaps they are mourning the same loss as you, or have experienced other difficulties. Let them know they are not alone.

THERE ARE ALSO STRANGERS
Love for strangers:
Bigger Steps:
Volunteering at a charitable organization is a great way to network and help others. Consider choosing a place that your loved one would support and act in their honor.
Join an interest group. Whether it’s a support group, photography club, choir or social gatherings, interacting with people with similar passions can be very beneficial.
Try to perform five acts of kindness in a day. Regardless of their scale, they will bring more love into the world and make you feel better.

Smaller steps:
Write a letter. To anyone. To an organization or person you admire. To someone who is going through a difficult time. To a child or teenager you want to support. Or perhaps to a deceased loved one.
Resolve to do one act of kindness a day.
Self-love: chicken the most important thing;

Recognize your limitations. Don’t force yourself into activities you don’t have the strength for.
Make it fun for yourself. On a budget, treat yourself to a day of relaxation – whatever that means to you. It could be a spa visit, shopping or a monster truck rally; if it relieves stress or makes you smile, anything is allowed.
Reserve time for an activity that will help you cope with your grief – exercise, yoga, journal writing, art, etc.
Allow yourself to truly relive the memories of your loved one and cry for as long as you need. Each of us has our own rituals and reminders that make us feel close to our deceased loved ones. Boldly engage in them.

Believe that next year will be a little easier.

Remember, talking about how to deal with difficult days is a frequent topic of mine. Let this day be an opportunity for you to show love – to yourself and others. Remember that you are not alone in your pain, and every gesture of kindness, both small , maybe invisible to someone – does the greatest work – for you !!!! and for the recipient .

With Metta

Have you ever wondered who a Death Doula is and how she can help you and your loved ones during a difficult time?

The most important thing to understand is that a Death Doula ( another name is End of Life Doula ) does not provide medical services.

She is a companion, a support, not only for the person who is on the last journey of life, but also for their loved ones.

The Death Doula educates families on what stages are normal and natural to expect in the dying process, so that it is not a drama but a dignified and loving, understanding event.

Last but not least, every Death Doula has a wide range of work possibilities: – accompanying elderly people (this can be done even for several years before the death comes)

the terminally ill
people in mourning
people who have lost a beloved pet
and those who are consciously planning for the end of their life, regardless of their age and state of health

A person who has lost an elderly parent will need and go through this process differently from a parent who has lost a child.
It would be appropriate to start with what bereavement is and what it is not.
I will return to this topic in future posts.

How do you cope with loss?
In our latest post we focus on the topic of coping with the loss of a loved one. Have you experienced bereavement and are looking for practical tips to help you through this difficult time? Here are some Grief and Bereavement tips that may be helpful to you.

The first step in coping with loss is to understand that each grieving process is individual. Everyone experiences loss differently and has unique emotional needs. Therefore, it is important to give yourself the time and space to experience grief on your own terms.

It is also important to surround yourself with social support. Seek out close people who understand you and can support you through difficult times. This could be family, friends, a support group or a professional therapist. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

An important aspect of coping with loss is taking care of yourself on a physical, emotional and spiritual level. Make sure you are getting the right amount of sleep, eating healthily and moving regularly. Introduce relaxation practices into your life, such as meditation, deep breathing or journal writing, which can help relieve stress and emotions.

Remember that the grieving process is not a straight and easy path. You may experience different emotions such as sadness, anger, pain or even relief. Give yourself permission to feel these emotions and don’t judge them. The grieving process is individual just like fingerprints.

Finally, remember that coping with loss is a process that takes time and patience. There is no one ‘correct’ way to grieve. Be gentle with yourself and allow yourself to go through the process in your own way and at your own pace.

There are many people around us, but there is not that one ONE person, and this makes the world seem empty. No one and nothing can replace those we have lost. You can re-enter a relationship, have another child or adopt a new pet. Even so, no one will ever again be the person we loved in our unique way. Over time, hour by hour, day by day, month by month and year by year, accepting this loneliness has become part of me. But it hasn’t stopped me from building new and deep relationships. This loneliness after losing my Dad, my Grandmother, my pets is my way of keeping a place for them in my heart and the love we shared…

Memories Are my memories of the dead all I have? No, I create new memories every day. Do I let grief make my memories a source of sadness and pain, or do I reclaim them and let them bring me joy?
I remember everything: times when we were very loving to each other, times when we argued, times when I felt lonely. I want to remember my Dad as he was and remember us as we were. One of the ways I keep my Father alive is by talking about him. Whether or not a loved one lived a long life or had a miscarriage – and I had 2 miscarriages – memories always remain. Memory is a place I like to visit .
Memories give us warmth and comfort. Conversely, the feeling that they can never be repeated tears us apart. My experience of bereavement was unlike anything I could have expected… In the beginning there was total darkness. I saw no way to find a spark of light. I didn’t know that perhaps I was already there, I just didn’t realise it. I didn’t even know how I could continue to breathe, but I was breathing. Part of experiencing my grief fully was the blessing of having so many memories of living and loving with my Father. My memories, as I learned how to make them whole again, showed me how to keep the darkness at bay and breathe.

Grief is a powerful tormenting factor that surrounds us and is trapped within us. What if we could use our memories to protect us from it? If grief doesn’t go away, what if we could create something beautiful around it – with memory? Photographs, like memories, can bring pleasure or pain, or both. Many of my father’s photographs in my home are placed in places that I had to choose where I wanted – or not – to look at them. I love his face, but sometimes the fact that he is no longer here makes me sad or angry . When I took these photos, I never thought they would become such a big part of what’s left of him.
Some people are afraid to forget their memories. And for me, that’s part of my pleasure: forgetting memories and rediscovering them. Did something really happen the way I remember it? It doesn’t matter… In my memories I find feelings, opinions and, most importantly, miłość

I remember, but…. we can no longer remember together. We can no longer argue about whose memory is accurate and whose is not. We can no longer laugh and cry together. In some ways, memory is even stronger and more precious to me. I am the keeper of my loved one’s story. This responsibility gives my life meaning. I am comforted by the thought that although time has taken my living Father away, it cannot take away the joy of the time we spent together unless… I let it. Those we love deeply become part of us. Time can sometimes increase the pain, but it also increases my capacity for joy as I feel more and more that my father is part of me. I love him more !!! not less. I feel that he still holds my hand and leads me forward.
Is this the case for you?
Two words took root in my brain and for so many years I couldn’t weed them out. GUILTY and WHATEVER. Almost everyone here , when describing their experiences uses these words : if I hadn’t left her/his bed…, if I could have turned back time…, if I had paid attention then to what … If you are this person and you feel guilty I ask you the question : have you ever done anything with the intention of hurting this person? 99 % answer unequivocally : No !
The dictionary definition of guilt presupposes an intentional intention to cause harm. Since you did not have the intention to cause harm, try to leave the word where it belongs : in the encyclopaedia. I’m convinced that you are devastated enough by the death of a loved one that you don’t yet need to add to your hurt by an inappropriate word that distorts your feelings.
For 5 years I lived with a huge sense of guilt. Until I finally started to come out of this black abyss, out of this darkness.
And this to all of you from the bottom of my heart życzę

Coping with Loss: The Enduring Longing for Connection

Coping with loss is never a straight line. No matter how many days, weeks, months, or even years have passed since the death of a loved one, grief can persist. At every stage of the grieving process, I continue to feel a deep longing for her presence. The loss never truly fades—there’s a constant yearning for closeness, even if it’s only temporary or imagined.

Despite the passage of time, the hope of feeling that closeness again, even for a moment, still lives in my heart. I long for the return of this person in any form, even if that moment is as impermanent as a fleeting dream. Euripides’ words about loss and love reflect my emotional truth. Above all, I remain open to any kind of connection, no matter how intangible or fleeting it might be.This openness—this readiness—has brought me comfort more than once. I have felt her presence in small ways: a familiar scent, a song on the radio, a vivid dream. These moments don’t erase the pain, but they offer solace.

According to Psychology Today, recognizing and accepting these subtle signs can be an important part of healing. I’ve learned that coping with loss means being present, being open, and allowing even brief connections to soothe the soul.

If you’re grieving, I wish you the same gentle comfort. I hope you remain open to the signs and the love that continues in unexpected forms.

Traditions – let’s cherish them with love and flexibility. Tradition has something extremely soothing about it. It provides a sense of security, connects the past to the present and allows us to feel a bond with those who are no longer with us. However, after the loss of a loved one, sometimes change is needed – though it’s not easy. Changing traditions can remind us of another loss, so it can sometimes be difficult to accept. Many of us try to keep everything the way it was, so as not to lose our ties to the past. But does this help? Often the opposite is true – the absence of a loved one becomes even more noticeable. Therefore, it’s worth asking yourself and your loved ones the question:
“How can we nurture tradition while allowing it to change?” There is no single answer – each family will find its own way. However, it is worth considering what is really behind our rituals. Is it community? A sense of generosity? Remembrance of loved ones? Spirituality? Discovering the true value of tradition can help us find the flexibility to preserve what is most important, while opening ourselves up to novelty. Remember – the most important thing is not what is changing, but why we are making these changes. It is our intention that gives meaning to any tradition.
